The market for spinal implants and devices was estimated to be worth USD 12.4 billion in 2021, and from 2022 to 2030, it is anticipated to increase at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1%. The increase in spinal cord injuries (SCIs) worldwide is responsible for the market expansion. Damage to the spinal cord results from compression or injury on the outside of the cord. The primary causes of this compression are either spinal degeneration, bone fractures, or anomalies such hematomas or herniated discs.
According to WHO figures, between 250,000 and 500,000 SCI cases are reported worldwide each year. The majority of SCIs are brought on by avoidable factors like falls, road accidents, and violence. WHO estimates that there are 40 to 80 cases of SCI per million people worldwide each year. Patients with SCI have a higher risk of mortality because they are 2 to 5 times more likely than patients without SCI to pass away before their expected death. The majority of traumatic SCIs are brought on by accidents at work or in sports. Additionally, the growing geriatric population and the number of obese people commonly experience symptoms linked to spinal illnesses including spinal stenosis, which further increases demand spinal implant procedures and fuels the market's expansion. In addition, obesity often makes low back problems worse and increases the risk of recurrence. Degenerative disc disorders, spondylolisthesis, vertebral compression fractures, and spinal stenosis are the main spine-related conditions affecting the elderly population.
The number of SCIs has dramatically increased as a result of the increase in traffic collisions. According to data from the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCSC), some of the main causes of SCI include motor vehicle accidents involving cars as well as steamrollers, bulldozers, forklifts, and other unclassified vehicles. According to NCBI, the lumbosacral spine was the most often affected area in research that included all patients who had spinal fractures as a result of road accidents. Whiplash, a neck/cervical spine injury, herniated discs, and vertebral fractures are a few of the most typical spine injuries caused by auto accidents. Fall injuries were the second-leading cause of SCI between 2018 and 2019, according to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center at UAB (31.8%). The prevalence of SCI caused by falls among Americans 65 and older has considerably grown during the past four decades. According to NCBI, over 75% of SCI cases related to falls occur among people 76 years of age and younger.
The market for spinal implants and devices is divided into five product categories: spinal biologics, non-fusion devices, vertebral compression fracture therapy devices, and spinal bone growth stimulators. As more spinal fusion procedures are performed, spinal fusion devices held the greatest market share in 2021. High growth has been brought on by technological advancements in spine fusion surgeries, whether internal fixation is used or not. The increased use of spine fusions has also increased the demand for these procedures. Congenital or degenerative deformity, spondylolisthesis, spinal tumours, and pseudoarthrosis are a few of them. However, the non-fusion treatment is a successful substitute for spinal fusion, which permanently joins two or more vertebrae together.
Devices for treating vertebral compression fractures are predicted to expand at the quickest rate over the projection period because they are frequently employed in minimally invasive operations (MIS). A vertebral compression fracture in the spinal column is frequently caused by osteoporosis. Nearly 75% of patients who have vertebroplasty, a type of surgery for spinal compression fractures, regain lost mobility.
The spinal implants and devices market is divided into motion preservation, vertebral compression fracture treatment, and spinal fusion and fixation technologies. In 2021, spinal fusion and fixation technologies accounted for the biggest market share because they cover a wide range of surgical procedures, including both posterior and anterior approaches. Posterolateral gutter fusion surgery, posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), and transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) surgery are a few of the often-used posterior methods.
Due to the fact that they offer patients with lumbar spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, and facet pain a better alternative to spinal fusion than spinal fusion, motion preservation technologies are anticipated to see the highest CAGR during the projection period. Total disc replacement (TDR), prosthetic nucleus replacement (PNR), posterior dynamic devices (PDD), and facet replacement are the several subcategories of this technology.
By type of surgery, the spinal implants and devices market is divided into open surgery and MIS. Although it is becoming less common, open spine surgery is still frequently done. Open surgery involves a number of negative side effects, such as prolonged operating times and high levels of invasiveness. As a result, the majority of procedures involve substantial blood loss, which increases the risk of injury or infection to healthy tissues.
On the other hand, MIS is frequently favoured by both patients and doctors. Therefore, during the forecast period, MIS is anticipated to have the fastest growth rate. Through microscopic incisions, surgeons operate on the spine with cutting-edge equipment. Because MIS incisions are substantially smaller than those used in open surgery, there is a lower chance of muscle and soft tissue damage. MIS is computer-based, directed by cutting-edge navigation technologies, and ensures a higher level of accuracy.
The spinal implants and devices market is divided into discectomy, laminotomy, foraminotomy, corpectomy, and facetectomy segments based on the procedure type. Due to its prevalence as a spine surgery, laminotomy retained the greatest market share in 2021. Laminectomy and discectomy are often carried out in tandem. These decompressive procedures are the ones that are carried out the most frequently in the United States. In the US, spinal decompression surgery costs on average USD 23,500.
Over the forecast period, foraminotomy is anticipated to experience the highest CAGR. In the upcoming years, the market is anticipated to be driven by the patient population's increased acceptance of MIS operations. Foraminal stenosis and pinched nerves are the two main conditions this technique is used to treat. The majority of patients have success with this treatment, and foraminotomy problems are uncommon.
Due to the rise in SCIs in the U.S., North America led the market in 2021. The U.S. spine market has experienced rapid expansion as a result of technological developments, which is also boosting the growth of the local market. The demand for spinal implants in the nation has been significantly influenced by healthcare reimbursement. Important firms have increased their market revenue significantly in the US.
Due to an increase of SCI instances in China and India, the Asia Pacific region is expected to grow at the quickest rate throughout the projection period. The technologically improved spine surgeries used in Japan have also aided in the rapid expansion. The regional expansion is also being heavily fueled by the rising number of vehicle accidents and the ageing population.
Key players are engaging in a variety of strategic measures to increase their market shares, including mergers and acquisitions, technology partnerships, collaborations, and the creation and introduction of cutting-edge products. Cohere TLIF-O implant and Cohere TLIF-A implant for posterior spine surgery were both introduced by NuVasive in October 2021. Medtronic completed its amicable tender offer for Medicrea International in November 2020. A French business called Medicrea specialises in spinal surgery technologies using predictive modelling, artificial intelligence, and patient-specific implants. According to the tender offer, Medtronic holds more than 90% of the voting rights and share capital of Medicrea. The following companies are some of the major players in the worldwide spinal implants & devices market:
Does your business provide a service or good that is essential to generating a competitive advantage? It is important to consider the chance to meet with potential customers and present your services as a distinct marketing advantage. Exhibitions offer a terrific platform to forge long-lasting connections with important figures in the spine care market once you are aware of your target audience and business objectives. Even if the social media sector is expanding rapidly, face-to-face marketing still outperforms it when it comes to generating quality leads. Exhibitions can give you the chance to network with new people and expand your business into new areas.
By participating in an exhibit at a Spine Conference in 2023, you will also have the chance to meet a sizable segment of your target market in a single day rather than over the course of several months with your sales staff. This minimizes the amount of time needed to close a sales lead.
The top 6 reasons to exhibit at a Spine Conference are listed below. Consider exhibiting at the 2023 Spine Congress. Here are six good reasons to. Use the Spine 2023 Expo as an illustration.
One of the oldest university cities in Europe, Vienna has a long history of being a center of scientific innovation and research. Today, Vienna is the largest university city in the German-speaking countries, with 190,000 students – more than Berlin or Munich combined. About one-fourth of the city's enrolled pupils are international.
Nine universities, five technical colleges, and over 1,500 research institute collectively compose the research landscape. Finding a creative and stimulating place to work in Vienna involves doing so. Vienna is frequently ranked as having the finest quality of life, therefore living there also implies living in a city with a high standard of living.
Austria's research hub is Vienna, where more than 40,000 researchers are employed, and more than EUR 2,8 billion is spent there annually on research. Vienna is home to over 35% of all Austrian researchers. Also, the city is responsible for roughly 40% of Austria's research spending. Vienna's research budget already surpasses 3.5% of GDP, exceeding the European Union's "Europe 2020" goal years before the target year of 2020.
Vienna is home to 30% of all research institutions in Austria. Research is not just conducted in universities and significant research institutions. Over the last few years, there has been a 50% increase in the number of companies doing research. In Vienna, there are almost 1,500 research institutions operating, more than half of which are enterprises.
The overall goal of the Spine Congress is to advance global research on Spinal Disorders, Neurospine Medicine, and Spine Care, with a focus on interdisciplinary scientific exchange and collaboration across national boundaries.
The theme "Creating a Future Map for Spine Care" will be emphasized during this year's Spine Congress.
Additionally, Spine 2023 intends to foster networking and cooperation between academic research groups and industrial R&D teams by giving young researchers (35 and under) the chance to discuss their fundamental, translational, or clinical research in the area of spine care to a group of peers.
In order to advance the understanding of spinal disorders among general practitioners and raise awareness of the warning signs among the general public, medical professionals who are interested in spine care must collaborate. This is true both from a purely scientific perspective and in order to educate general practitioners about the evolving concepts of spinal disorders. The best environment for this would be a well-organized scientific meeting. The Spine Conference is designed not only for spine surgeons but also for specialists in geriatrics, rehabilitation, and intensive care as well as neurosurgeons, orthopaedic surgeons, neuroradiologists, and neurointerventionalists.
